– Vi har lagt grunden för att föra stamcellstransplantationer mot kliniken för att behandla personer med Parkinsons sjukdom Parkinson's disease may start in the gut Parkinson's disease is strongly linked to the degeneration of the brain’s movement center. In the last decade, the question of where the disease begins has led researchers to a different part of the human anatomy. In 2003, the German neuropathologist Heiko Braak presented a theory suggesting that the disease begins in the gut and spreads to the brain. One of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, Novo Nordisk, are starting a new stem cell program for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease in close collaboration with Lund University.

The disease progression is believed to be driven by a misfolded protein that clumps together and Objective: To study biomarkers of angiogenesis in Parkinson disease (PD), and how these are associated with clinical characteristics, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, and cerebrovascular disease. Methods: In this cross-sectional analysis, 38 elderly controls and 100 patients with PD (82 without dementia and 18 with dementia) were included from the prospective Swedish BioFinder study. Overlap between Alzheimer´s disease and Parkinson could speed up the research. Alzheimer’s disease is characterised by so-called plaques – white clumps of the beta-amyloid protein in the brain. However, there are few longitudinal studies that explore the effect of disease progression on diffusion indices. Methods: We prospectively included 76 patients with PD and 38 healthy controls (HC), all of whom underwent diffusion kurtosis The formation of α-synuclein aggregates is a major pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease.

A major breakthrough in the development of stem cell-derived brain cells has put researchers on a firm path towards the first ever stem cell transplantations in people with Parkinson’s disease. - In our preclinical assessments of stem cell-derived dopamine neurons we noticed that the outcome in animal models varied dramatically, even though the cells were very similar at the time of transplantation.

We sought to investigate morphological and resting state functional connectivity changes to the striatal nuclei in Parkinson disease (PD) and examine whether The ultimate aim is to develop these cells and technologies for use in brain repair, with focus on Parkinson’s disease. Donating to Lund University CSF biomarkers of angiogenesis are increased in PD, and they are associated with gait difficulties, BBB dysfunction, WMLs, and CMB. Abnormal angiogenesis may be important in PD pathogenesis and contribute to dopa-resistant symptoms.
