232 Th is an α-emitter with a half-life of 1.40(1)×10 10 a, decaying through a branched series to 208 Pb Thorium is a chemical element with atomic number 90 which means there are 90 protons and 90 electrons in the atomic structure. The chemical symbol for Thorium is Th. Thorium metal is silvery and tarnishes black when exposed to air, forming the dioxide. Thorium is moderately hard, malleable, and has a high melting point. Thorium-234 has 90 protons and 144 neutrons with a total atomic mass of 234 As Thorium-234 undergoes beta decay, a neutron becomes a proton. The atomic number goes up one as the new element has an additional proton. The atomic mass stays the same … Name: Thorium: Symbol: Th: Atomic Number: 90: Atomic Mass: 232.038 atomic mass units: Number of Protons: 90: Number of Neutrons: 142: Number of Electrons: 90: Melting Atomic Number: 90 (protons in nucleus) Atomic Weight: 232 (naturally occurring) Radioactive Properties of Key Thorium Isotopes and Associated Radionuclides Radiation Energy (MeV) Isotope Half-Life Natural Abundance (%) Specific Activity (Ci/g) Decay Mode Alpha (α) Beta (β) Gamma (γ) Th-232 14 billion yr >99 0.00000011 α 4.0 0.012 0.0013 2017-10-30 Thorium (Th), radioactive chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table, atomic number 90; it is a useful nuclear reactor fuel.

A radioactive isotope of thorium (232Th; atomic number 90.
The elements with an atomic number higher than 83 do not have stable isotopes: they are called radioelements. The naturally occurring radioelements are mainly found in thorium and uranium ores. Uranium-238, uranium-235, and thorium-232 have long half-life (238 U: 4.5×10 9 years, 235 U: 7.04×10 8 years, 232 Th: 1.4×10 10 years).

Thorium 232 is the most common isotope of thorium in the nature. 232Th is a fertile isotope, but is not capable of undergoing fission reaction after absorbing thermal neutron. Four-fifths of the thorium present at Earth's formation has survived to the present. 232 Th is the only isotope of thorium occurring in quantity in nature. Its stability is attributed to its closed nuclear subshell with 142 neutrons. Thorium has a characteristic terrestrial isotopic composition, with atomic weight 232.0377 (4).
If thorium-232 is bombarded with neutrons, it goes through a series of nuclear changes, first to thorium-233,
Use conservation of atomic number & conservation of mass number to balance them.
